Substrate and ecology: Usually on damp, often sheltered and shaded, calcareous rock or mortar, sometimes spreading to adjacent soil and mosses

World distribution: Circumboreal-temperate, Northern Hemisphere; Europe, North Africa; North America (mostly eastern, but also reported from British Columbia and California)
